The Diaries of Emilio Renzi: A Day in the Life by Ricardo Piglia
Author:Ricardo Piglia
Format: epub
Now, he emphasized, after defeat, they had all returned to the fold, now they were all official, recognized writers; they received prizes and were interviewed on television and put their names on editorial columns in the major newspapers, and their photos appeared frequently in magazines and periodicals. Now, he furiously emphasized once again, writers were decorative; they were received in salons, in embassies; they traveled from place to place, gave talks, and were insignificant but well-regarded; the most important cultural slogan in the new era was âbe visible or be dead,â and everyone wanted to show up, as they say, wanted to make themselves seen, and authors now were more important than their books, which was certain because their books were so insignificant that one photo in the cultural supplement of a local newspaper was worth more than three or four of their published books. Things being so, Emilio had perceived with clarity that one era had ended and a culture had been destroyed. Before, thought Renzi, we could circulate in the margins, attached to counterculture, to the underground world of art and literature, but now weâre all little figures on an impoverished stage and must play the game that has dominated the world. He had no hope or will or courage to change things or, at least, to run the risk of living on illusions. And so he thought that this season of his life had ended and his twenty-five years devoted to becoming a writer had concluded. And what came after was predictable and mundane and wasnât a part of the history of how his personal spirit had been formed.
